Larry walked into the house. It was still much quieter that it should’ve been. His children not being home still didn’t sit well with him, and the reason they were gone was even harder for him to accept. It still managed to anger him to no end, but it was nothing compared to the phone call he had gotten on the way home from the senior member of the church’s board, Deacon Edward Hampton.

The moment Larry heard the man’s voice he knew something had to have been gravely wrong.

“Deacon, its kind of late to be hearing from you. Is everything all right?” Larry asked, staring out the back window of the Bentley.

“What happened on Sunday…” Deacon Hampton said. “…you leaving so abruptly—“

“I’m sorry, but there was an emergency at home and—“

“No need to explain, but I’m going to get straight to it, Bishop,” Deacon Hampton said, never having been a man to mince words. “The board believes with everything going on, the potential for people to associate your mess with the church…well, we believe we all might be better served if you step down till all this is resolved.”

Larry clutched the phone tight, pressed it harder to his ear when he said, “You can’t do this! This is my—“

“We can and you know that. But it’s not done yet, Bishop. There still has to be a vote. I just wanted to extend a courtesy to you so you won’t feel blindsided if and when we decide to have you suspended.”

Larry frowned. “When is the vote?”

“Next Monday.”

“A week from now?” Larry said.

“That’s correct,” Deacon said. “Goodnight, Bishop.”

Now, Larry walked through the living room, into the divining room, wondering what steps he could possibly take next. It wasn’t bad enough that he was being sued for everything he had. Now he had to worry about losing his position in a church that would not be standing if it weren’t for him.

Stopping at the doorway to the kitchen, he saw Estelle sitting at the table, her back to him, watching a program on the kitchen TV.

“Estelle,” Larry said, trying his best to sound happy to see her, as he walked past her to the fridge. “How was your day?” He pulled open the door. Not finding anything appetizing, he closed it.

“Good Larry,” Estelle said, sounding as disappointed as he was that their paths had crossed. She turned off the TV and stood. “How are you dealing with all that’s going on?”

“As well as can be expected, I suppose.”

Estelle stared at him as though resenting the very fact that she had to even ask that question—and that he had done something so wrong, caused enough suspicion to be sued, putting his family through this needless drama.

“I hope it all works out for you.”

No you don’t, you old bitch, Larry thought, showing her a fake smile as he watched Estelle turn and head upstairs for the evening.

Larry realized he had lost his appetite and climbed the stairs himself. He pushed his way into the bedroom, saw Marian lying down, still dressed, reading something on her Kindle.
